Lathe / Multifix A 40 position QCTP
I acquired a Chinese knockoff of the Swiss Multifix (size A) quick change tool
post from my good friend Emma,
along with a couple of 16mm
tool holders and a blank tool holder suitable for
making custom tools with.
This QCTP is truly exceptional compared to the tiny Fortuna/Dickson style that
I got shortly after the lathe and really was undersized. The Multifix A is
perhaps the largest toolpost one can comfortably use with this machine, and
while most of the toolholders are for 16mm
(5/8 in
) tools, the largest tools one
can hold is 14mm
(a bit over 1/2 in
).
This QCTP with 12mm carbide insert tooling is a fantastic match for this machine.
A new stud was machined from a short sample of 4140 Emma sent with the QCTP,
it was pre-hardened and my Fortuna struggled to hold the tools rigidly
breaking several insert edges. The stud uses a very fine pitch, M12x1
, as I
felt M10
was too coarse for the short thread engagement in the T-nut.
A nut with a tall column was also machined, the tall column is for clamping tools such as an indicator, or possibly a phone / small video camera for filming close to the cutter.
